You had a great time last night, and it seemed like a good idea then, but here you are bleary-eyed, dry-mouthed, head pounding, and searching for natural hangover cures. You regret it, and may even be vowing you won’t do that again.
We’re here to help.
The Basics of Hangover Recovery
The most important thing is to drink (no, not more alcohol!) When you drink large amounts of alcohol, it depletes the water stores in your system and causes dehydration. This is a main reason behind some of those classic hangover symptoms, so the way to deal with is – first and foremost – to rehydrate. Drink water.
Now, you do need to be careful because you can consume too much water too quickly. If you do, it’s possible to strip electrolytes out of the body so it’s better to either stick to about 2 x 8oz glasses of water per hour, or make sure you replenish the electrolytes as you go. That’s why sports drinks are particularly effective in hangover recovery. They rehydrate you, raise your blood sugar level, and all while providing the crucial electrolytes (sodium, potassium, etc) that you are likely to have lost through your kidneys because of the alcohol and the time you were sleeping it off.
The problem with sports drinks, however, is that they are typically full of refined sugar, artificial flavors and coloring. So a more natural option is to drink plain water, and have bananas for their potassium and fructose content. Or you can make a simple banana smoothie by blending a couple of bananas with some milk. If you don’t have bananas, you can use apples or other non-citrus fruit. Even raw honey (a great natural source of electrolytes) dissolved in water.
Natural Hangover Cures for That Splitting Headache
And what about those painkillers? Most people suffering from a hangover reach for some kind of chemical relief. But that’s just fighting pain with poison — even the humble aspirin can damage the lining of your stomach. There are better all-natural options that are still very effective … a long-time favorite herbal remedy to deal with that headache is Feverfew. Two others are raw persimmon and raw cabbage.
The thing that will be the best help for detoxifying your circulatory system is exercise. You may not feel like it, but as soon as you can manage it take a brisk 30 minutes walk.
Next Time Around
If you’re committed to a healthier lifestyle, you should only drink alcohol in moderation (if at all). But if you do expect you are going to overindulge, here are a some ways to minimize the effects and head off that bad hangover before you get it. Before you need our natural hangover cures!
Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. A good rule is to drink a glass of water in between every alcoholic beverage. But at the very least, have a couple of large glasses of water before going to sleep.
Put a teaspoon of Bifidus powder in one of the glasses of water. Bifidus is beneficial bacteria that detoxifies acetaldehyde, which is a byproduct of alcohol and a major contributing factor to the symptoms of hangover.
Foods that are high in unsaturated fats are known to minimize the effects of alcohol. An old native American legend was that eating six raw almonds before a drinking session would stop you getting drunk. Similar traditions from Africa recommended peanut butter.
Another option to take before you start drinking — especially for women — is Evening Primrose Oil.
